AmeriCorps is a national service program that partners with non-profit agencies to meet the critical needs of communities. The American Red Cross hosts state-wide AmeriCorps programs in California that focus on educating communities on emergency readiness and assisting those who have been affected by disasters. The Disaster Workforce Engagement department plays a pivotal role in onboarding new volunteers, establishing relationships with and engaging current volunteers, and maintaining a trained and ready workforce for when disaster strikes.

Location: 2227 S. Atlantic Blvd. Commerce, CA 90040

Main duties:

  • Support the preparedness of community members through the outreach, facilitation, and delivery of preparedness education trainings
  • Support the recovery of community members who have been affected by disasters such through client casework and/or respond to local emergencies as an active member of the Disaster Action Team (DAT) to support the recovery of individuals impacted by disasters such as home fires and other local emergencies
  • Utilize a team of volunteers to conduct onboarding sessions for new volunteers
  • Recruit, cultivate and maintain a team of staff and volunteers to conduct ongoing volunteer engagement activities, ensuring volunteers receive the premier volunteer experience.
  • In times of disaster, this role will transition into fulfilling the function of staffing services, which includes deploying staff/volunteers to a disaster and supporting responders throughout their deployment
  • Provide CPR/First Aid trainings to vulnerable populations and assist with the coordination of the trainings



Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be able to serve approx. 40 hours per week, from 09/14/2020 to 07/23/2021
  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • Able to pass a criminal background check
  • Holds either a High School Diploma or GED Certificate
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Possess a current U.S. driver’s license
  • Applicants who currently reside outside of California should be prepared to relocate, if selected for the position

Qualification Requirements:

  • Able to serve outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Comfortable with public speaking and demonstrating leadership skills
  • Flexible to shifting priorities, taking initiative whenever possible
  • Bilingual language skills in Spanish is not required, but highly desired



  • Bi-weekly stipend of $782.61 (before taxes)

  • Federal student loan forbearance for the duration of the service term
  • AmeriCorps members that successfully complete the service term, will be eligible to receive a $6,195 Segal Federal Education Award to use for educational expenses at an eligible institution, to repay qualified student loans, or both
