As Director of Operations Cardiac Surgery Programs, you will be responsible for the overall fiscal performance of the identified service components, including budget, marketing, and program development. Your role as Director of Cardiac Surgery Programs requires that you work with the Medical Directors of the clinical programs, and Cardiothoracic Surgery to develop and execute the strategic plan to improve clinical and service quality and increase market share. Being a Director of Cardiac Surgery Programs means providing leadership, planning, support, and coordination to facilitate programs and services. Working with physicians, hospital leaders, and staff, you will enhance and substantially improve each service, and thus the overall Heart and Vascular Institute.

The Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart and Vascular Institute is one of the preeminent cardiovascular centers on the West Coast and has achieved international and national accreditation for many of its programs, including but not limited to The Heart Valve Center, Structural Heart, Aortic, Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiac Surgery, and Cardiac Rehabilitation programs.

Hoag’s expert cardiovascular team includes highly trained cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and other specialists who work closely to diagnose and treat vascular disease, as well as other heart-related conditions. Together, this multidisciplinary team provides streamlined access to a full array of advanced cardiovascular care tailored to the individual. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons ranked Hoag’s Cardiovascular Surgery Program in the highest category for quality and successful outcomes, achieved by only 10 percent of hospitals nationwide.

Hoag’s physicians are actively involved in progressive research and clinical trials enabling greater access to advanced cardiovascular care. Each year, the cardiovascular surgery team at Hoag Heart Valve Center repairs more heart valves than 90 percent of all cardiac programs in the nation. Being a high-volume cardiac surgery center enables the cardiovascular team at Hoag to achieve a technical skill level not all facilities can match.

Duties as Director may include:

  • Developing, planning, and implementing HVI’s objectives, goals and business strategies to profitably build revenue system-wide.

  • Aligning Institute activities with the Organization's long-term strategy.

  • Monitoring and evaluating HVI’s performance and recommending and executing appropriate changes in plans to achieve optimal results.

  • Assessing technology, reimbursement issues, market dynamics, and developing a three-year business plan for the Institute.

  • Strategically organizing, prioritizing, and managing HVI’s initiatives and optimizing resources to effectively ensure that the needs of patients are met in a cost-effective way.

  • In collaboration with Marketing and Corporate Communications, developing and executing the one-year/three-year business plans, overseeing performance targets to achieve the expected results, and contributing to the success of HVI’s goals/outcomes.

  • Identifying new services and program opportunities on an Organization-wide level to create profitable revenue, market share growth, and benefit the communities we serve.

  • Developing, building, and maintaining collaborative relationships with physicians and Organizational management. Managing relationships with physicians to find new sources of programs/services revenue and for consulting with physicians on business opportunities, and practice growth and development.

  • Collaborating with physicians, Organization administration, Marketing, and Corporate Communications to develop, execute and monitor key initiatives/strategies, enhance growth/referral opportunities, and enhance HVI’s programs.

  • Analyzing and interpreting results to lead to fact-based segment and Cardiac development decisions. Using information and research-based tools to better understand the implications of market change and competition, and tracking the system-wide Institute key performance indicators.

  • Being accountable for the development, implementation, and monitoring of budgets (expense, assets, production, projects).

  • Developing and administering policies and procedures to accomplish department-specific and Organizational initiatives.

  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained by professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum of five (5) years program management experience for Cardiac Surgery Programs, preferably within an acute healthcare environment.

  • Excellent communication skills; customer focused; excellent attention to detail; able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; able to work in a team environment.

  • Proven excellent customer service skills, including the ability to progressively probe, analyze, identify root causes of problems, provide practical solutions, and negotiate resolutions.

  • Solid computer technical skills required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).

  • Ability to make independent business decisions, considering both the impact to client satisfaction and financial results.

  • Current or Past Licensure as a Registered Nurse.

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN).


  • Masters degree in Health Care Administration or related health-care field.

  • Program management and business development experience in Cardiac Clinical programs, preferably within an acute healthcare environment.
