Position Summary
The mission of the AMDA Performing Arts Libraries is to inspire inquiry, foster intellectual and personal growth, and promote the effective use of information. As an academic library serving a diverse community, we are dedicated to providing access to information resources that reflect many voices and perspectives.
The Systems and Technology Librarian helps to foster a technologically advanced environment for the AMDA Libraries. They strive to problem solve, improve existing processes, and help others learn new technology skills. All AMDA librarians are expected to function well as a member of a highly collaborative team and to contribute to general reference and research services as needed.
A key role for the Systems and Technology Librarian is the administration of the integrated library system that underpins the operations of the Libraries and serves as a platform for other software applications such as discovery systems, link resolvers, library knowledge bases, and interlibrary loan programs. Additionally, the Systems and Technology Librarian directly supports or administers various library systems including but not limited to 3rd party library management applications, the library website, and the institutional repository.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Integrated Library System & OPAC
  • Administers and maintains the Integrated Library System/Library System Platform (ILS) for the college libraries in conjunction with the security system tracking circulation.
  • Manages, optimizes, implements, troubleshoots, and documents the library's current Integrated Library System TLC LibrarySolutions2 (LS2) or any other future ILS platform. Serves as the primary liaison for troubleshooting and management within all ILS modules, such as Circulation, Cataloging, Reports, Admin/Preferences
  • Ensures that the ILS works seamlessly with OCLC EZProxy and helps troubleshoot eResource access issues.
  • Helps maintain the functionality, organization, integrity, and design of the library’s Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Assists in original and copy-cataloging of library materials, including but not limited to books, musical scores, audiovisual materials, and born-digital content.
  • Other Library Systems
  • Various Library Applications: In coordination with the AMDA librarians, participates in the training and implementation of library and library-related applications including but not limited to the LS2 ILS, LibGuides CMS (website), entire LibApps suite, scheduling software (Calendly), any future discovery layer, any future digital collections/institutional repository related applications, and others.
  • Library Website: Develops and Maintains the Library's website hosted on the SpringShare Libguides platform in collaboration with both campus libraries.
  • Canvas: Supports the libraries' connection to the school's learning management system (LMS) Canvas. Coordinates with the LMS Administrator to update and provide access to library resources using LibGuides and other library integrations.
  • Information Technology Trends: Keeps abreast of the quickly evolving library and information technology landscape and responsive solutions, best practices, and trends especially as it pertains to academic libraries and arts libraries.
  • Office of Information Technology
  • Serves as the libraries' primary liaison to AMDA’s Information Technology (IT) department for library technology software applications and relevant systems.
  • Works closely with AMDA IT to ensure server changes, migrations, IP address changes, single sign-on (SSO) implementation, and system upgrades occur with minimal disruption to the library website, library databases, Integrated Library Systems, library vendors and other basic library operations.
  • Works closely with IT staff to regularly import student, staff, and faculty data to the ILS.
  • Future Projects
  • Collaborate with Library' staff to propose, develop, and subsequently maintain special collections material including, but not limited to, controlled digital lending (CDL) and institutional repository platforms.
  • Configure and implement OCLC WorldShare (ILL), OCLC Collection Manager, and other future technology-based services.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves as a resource for training staff and students in library software applications such as the ILS, collaboration tools, or any other academic technology applications.
  • In collaboration with the Library team, hires, trains, and supervises student workers to support the ILS and other systems as needed.
  • Occasionally delivers instruction related to various library systems or technology as needed.
  • Performs other duties as necessary to maintain Library services and operations.
Necessary Skills & Abilities
  • Familiarity of client/server environment and experience with software applications needed to administer application environments in order to liaise and collaborate with campus IT departments.
  • Working knowledge of standard web browser display and application technologies, including usability, accessibility, and cross-browser compatibility issues. HTML and CSS knowledge/experience is required. Experience with Javascript is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of academic library industry standards, practices, and trends, particularly regarding Integrated Library Systems (ILS), Discovery Systems/Layers, Electronic Resources Management Systems (ERMs), OCLC software, and related systems.
  • Familiarity with common library interoperability protocols (OAI, Z39.50, SRU)
  • Understanding of the market regarding new and on-going development of integrated library systems, library catalogs, discovery systems, research and collaboration applications, academic technology, Digital Archives, digital collections, and related systems.
  • Familiarity with various 3rd party library vendors such as LibApps, OCLC WorldCat, OCLC Worldshare, ILL, eReserves platforms and solutions, and various institutional repository platforms.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems, preferably Canvas.
  • Ability to troubleshoot various systems issues and serve as lead for resolving them.
  • Must have strong service orientation and understanding of the libraries' and institution's needs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to work well with diverse students, faculty, staff and with non-traditional students.
Education & Experience
  • Master's degree in library and information science/studies from an ALA accredited institution (or related master's degree with experience relevant to the position) is preferred.
  • At least one year working in an academic library, preferably working directly with or administering integrated library systems or as a library professional with evidence of broad, in-depth technology and systems knowledge skills.
Additional Information
Position Location: Los Angeles campus
This position traditionally works during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, though occasional evening or weekend hours may be necessary. Alternate work schedules and partial remote-work will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
This position would require travel between the AMDA Libraries depending on specific local projects. For instance, the New York Library is moving to a new location in Spring 2022 and this position would facilitate the implementation of technology services in the new space, including security gates connected to the ILS and software updates to staff work stations.
