Monzo - Los Angeles, CA

Posted 2 months ago

Monzo is a bank that lives on your phone. Our mission is to make money work for everyone: to make our customers effortlessly financially savvy with smart features, unexpectedly friendly service, and a relentless focus on what people genuinely want and need. Our net promoter score of +80 is more than 2x that of other banks, and we're the fastest-growing bank in the UK.
Monzo better resembles a fast-paced tech startup than a traditional bank – we move fast, ship things every day, and develop products iteratively. We're also very serious about the safety of our customers' money and their trust in us, so we default to transparency ( https://monzo.com/blog/2017/03/10/transparent-by-default/ ) both internally and externally, and we involve our community ( https://community.monzo.com/ ) in everything we do. We think one of our greatest strengths is our diverse team: everyone is welcome at Monzo and we help empower them to do the best work of their lives.
We've just launched in the US, and we're looking for an inspiring leader to join us as our first LA based Engineering Director. You'll have a rare and exciting opportunity to shape a product that will change the face of US banking. We have big ambitions in the US, and the team will grow really quickly (with your help).
Over the next 12 months, you'll:

  • Build a high-performing and diverse engineering team made up of of existing Monzo engineers from the UK and exceptional local talent.

  • Work with our hiring teams to successfully attract and hire top engineering and management talent, creating and iterating hiring processes where you need to.

  • Create effective onboarding processes to ensure we can hire at pace without compromising delivery.

  • Develop an intrinsic understanding of Monzo engineering culture, principles and practices and instil these across the LA team.

  • Report into our UK-based CTO and develop great relationships with the UK team, ensuring effective communication, context and cultural sharing.

  • Partner with our US leaders and executives on developing an exciting US product and a successful US business.

  • Working with the rest of the US team to forecast and plan our hiring needs to ensure we can deliver what we need to while remaining lean.

  • Deliver high-quality line management and personal development for ~15 engineers and hiring the engineers and managers you need to scale the team.

  • Partner with US and UK engineering leadership on the technical strategy of US systems and software. You'll decide whether we should buy or build, and always assume and pay down technical debt. You'll also make sure the rest of the team apply this to whatever they build.

  • Contribute to projects that help the company nurture, develop and scale a high-performing global engineering organisation through hiring and onboarding, progression and promotion, knowledge management and learning and development.

You should apply if:

  • You're excited by what Monzo is doing!

  • You have experience leading engineering organisations of 20+ people.

  • You have a track record of supporting and developing people - both managers and senior individual contributors (e.g. staff, principal engineers, architects).

  • You're great at building strong, effective relationships with people from different disciplines.

  • You lead through influence and build autonomous organisations that repeatedly deliver results.

  • You have a track record of attracting, hiring and retaining top engineering talent at companies without an established tech brand.

Nice to have:

  • You have experience at a high-growth tech-driven company going from tens to hundreds of people.

  • You've successfully lead high-performing multi-disciplinary teams.

  • You have experience in a regulated environment, or the finance industry.

  • You have experience working and maintaining a culture across multiple timezones.

Note: this role may require regular travel to the UK.
If you're unsure about applying or have any questions about the role or team, please don't hesitate to email [email protected] We're very open about what we do in general, so our blog ( https://monzo.com/blog ) is a good place to learn more.
Logistics
---------
The interview process consists of:

  • 45-60 minute hangout call

  • 3 hour face to face interview

  • 1 hour face to face interview

The face to face interview take place at our East Hollywood offices, Los Angeles.
We encourage an open and transparent working environment. You can contribute ideas to and ask questions of any aspect of the business you are interested in and, following Stripe's example ( https://stripe.com/blog/email-transparency ), all emails in the company are visible in an email archive. We regularly run hackathons in which people build things on our third party API and we contribute to open source software as much as possible ( https://github.com/monzo ). We've also made our product roadmap public ( https://trello.com/b/9tcaMB4w/mondo-transparent-product-roadmap ) and give sneak peeks of features in our community forum ( https://community.monzo.com/ ).
We're an equal opportunity employer and prize diversity as a strength. Everyone is welcome at Monzo. We're keen to ensure we're designing a bank that works for everyone, so we particularly encourage applications from different underrepresented demographics.
