The non-profit news organization WhoWhatWhy is looking for a volunteer Senior Director of Software Engineering to enhance the productivity of the engineering team and to deliver differentiated innovation and value. A successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be able to influence and inspire success of the team and organization.

Expectations


You will work remotely and on your own schedule, though we require a minimum commitment of 5-8 hours a week. Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through email. All staff are required to respond to emails on a daily basis.

Responsibilities
  • Lead software development and qualification for current, and next generation Mass Media products
  • Recruit and manage software engineering team
  • Oversee product development from concept to mass production and sustaining
  • Drive timely delivery of software to the factory for all stages of production
  • Provide technical direction, guidance, mentoring and hands-on management
  • Work with product and program managers, communicate cross-functionally, and drive engineering efforts company-wide
  • Plan for operational efficiency to scale products, programs and practices



Qualifications

  • Relevant experience as a software developer / software manager
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field
  • Solid foundation in design and data structures
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills along with outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with current engineering technologies
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem solving and collaboration skills
