The Hardware Engineering Director provides overall technical leadership and management oversight for the Hardware Engineering organization. This position requires that the Hardware Engineering Director maintains a balance between strategic and tactical focus. The Hardware Engineering Director is responsible for providing organizational vision, leadership and guidance to ensure daily operations align with current and long-term Businesss goals. In this role, the Hardware Engineering Director drives the Hardware Engineering organization through innovation, adherence to process discipline and quality.
The Hardware Engineering Director is responsible for interfacing with other NS Engineering Organizations, Business Area Leadership, and other Stakeholders. The Hardware Engineering Director is an active participant on the Engineering leadership team and the L3T IEC Engineering Council. The Hardware Engineering Director is responsible for facilitating strong inter-/intra-organizational collaboration; support to organizational strategy development; is accountable for Hardware engineering process and metrics development and deployment; is responsible for Hardware Engineering program execution (i.e., meeting program cost, schedule and technical commitments).

The Hardware Engineering Director’s responsibilities include: providing day-to-day management and leadership of the Hardware Engineering Organization (includes RF design, digital design, mechanical and ASIC); staff planning; employee performance development and management (including: goal setting, career counseling, mentoring, coaching and employee training and cross-training, and employee development); creates succession plans and conducts talent reviews to ensure organizational diversity; maintains ownership of Hardware Engineering policies and procedures; supports the development/deployment of common engineering process initiatives; continuous process improvement using organizational metrics to drive improvements while ensuring process compliance; frequent interaction with business development and program leadership, to ensure program execution goals are being met; and the development of his direct reports by providing guidance, coaching and direction on performance development/management, career development, training, and resource allocation. Hardware Engineerng Director will develop strategies to mitigate the effects of global supply chain component shortages and excessive component lead times, on-going component obsolescence issues, and lifetime buy decisions. Director will strategize on how to design for cost, manufacturing and test with various manufacturing facilites and oversee transition from prototype development to full rate production. Director will also develop relationships with key contract manufacturers, board fabrication houses, board layout and design services. Director will work with the Hardware team to purchase capital test equipment, CAE tools and tool licenses (schematic capture, board layout, FPGA development, ME CAD, model & simulation), and arrange training for the team on tools and equipment. Director develops concepts for IRADs for adavanced hardware designs along with hardware roadmaps.
Candidates must have a proven track record of implementing best practices while leading their team through all aspects of Hardware /product development life-cycle, including: proposal development, hardware requirements specification, hardware design documentation/description, design for reliability, design for obsolescence, design for common parts libraries, Design for X, preliminary and detailed design, preliminary and detailed design reviews, product implementation, design verification testing, Integration, Verification and Validation (IV&V) activities, critical parameter management (KPPs, TPMs etc), product qualification, transition to production, production release, production test development, and maintenance/sustaining. The successful candidate must be able to assess items presented for peer review and customer submission, provide superior technical guidance, have an in-depth understanding of the benefits and downsides of various Hardware architecture decisions; understanding of full Engineering life-cycle, and be able to lead the Hardware team through the performance of technical studies and the resolution of technical disconnects and/or issues. Candidate should have an understanding of hardware design specific to GPS receiver design including RF direct sampling and subsampling, super heterodyne receiver design, and anti-jam GPS receiver design.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience:
    • A Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, and a minimum of 12-15 years of recent senior technical management or leadership position on complex aerospace program required, with at least 10 years of experience managing people as a team. Advanced Engineering degree or higher preferred. Management training/MBA a plus.
  • Hardware engineering background in integrated system performance across the full product development life-cycle.
  • Previous hands-on experience in the development, design, and analysis of state of the art systems
  • Firm understanding of the use of standard program and project management tools including: EVMS, Variance Analysis, Risk and Opportunity Management, IMP/IMS, DOORS; and Technical Performance Measures (TPMs) for monitoring and control of assigned program work scope.
  • Experience in Global Positioning Systems and/or Navigation Systems highly desirable.
  • Experience with identifying critical staffing resources to ensure staffing plans address technical development areas
  • Strong judgment and decision-making abilities while dealing with incomplete or inconsistent data.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and presentation), especially working with engineering teams, senior management and customers
  • Demonstrable experience contributing in a team environment for the purpose of developing innovative and creative solutions to a wide range of complex technical and programatic issues.
  • Demonstrated management and team leadership skills with the ability to work across functional team lines to identify salient issues and develop options for resolution.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to dialogue, negotiate, influence and work with others collaboratively and constructively.
  • Experience with board level RF, digital, power, thermal, mechanical design, FPGA/CPLD and ASIC.
