We are currently looking for a SEM Director to join Thales in Irvine, California. The SEM Director provides supervision and leadership to the Solution Engineering Managers. He/she leads the SEM team which is responsible for new development engineering and/or customer project efforts within the IFEC enterprise. The SEM Director is accountable to ensure projects achieve technical, schedule, and financial performance and is responsible to implement and track purposeful KPI’s. The Director functionally leads the SEM team to ensure they have the skills, abilities, and talent required to meet aggressive product development goals to satisfy existing customers and capture new markets.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Leads development SEM team, implementing processes, practices and tools in concert with SEM HOD.
  • Establishes and maintains the development program (SEM) KPIs for reporting.
  • Enabling their team members to provide risk mitigation strategies to support all development programs ensuring the end customers are supported on schedule/on cost/on quality.
  • Commit on engineering’s behalf as it relates to development programs to DPM.
  • Main stakeholders include but limited to VP DPM, Director DPM, VP BL, VP CPM & Director PLM.
  • He/she allocates teams to studies, bids and projects according with their needs
  • Supervision of direct reports who lead engineering project teams in the development and fielding of aircraft entertainment and connectivity products
  • Able to cultivate highly productive teams
  • Ability to work with all levels of management internally, externally, and cross culturally
  • Experience in leading new product developments
  • Can delegate to other team leaders/managers and track progress
  • Can lead teams of diverse technical disciplines (HW, SW, Certification, Installations)
  • Manage engineering department including budgets, hiring, performance, training, & salaries
  • In contact with key stake holders/sub-contractors /other disciplines
  • Ensures the deployment of processes, methods, tools, technical / product / engineering policies while respecting Entity / GBU / Thales policies and while managing efficiency and effectiveness by proposing improvements where necessary
  • The SEM Director is responsible to ensure the SEM team is capable of delivering key new features/capabilities to internal and external customers.
  • A successful and highly efficient SEM team will advance key technologies to satisfy existing customers and secure future markets.
  • This leader’s team manages work packages valued between $30M and $45M annually
  • SEM is responsible for scope schedule and budget

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years’ experience in a related Engineering discipline, computer science, mathematics, or technology or Master’s degree in field with 8+ years’ experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering management experience required
  • Understands Product Design, Development, & Strategy
  • Strong analytical abilities
  • Excellent communicator to both internal and external customers who is capable of communicating at the executive level and across a multi-cultural organization
  • Ability to multiplex among several large projects
  • Prior experience with financial tracking methods and tools
  • Plans and carries out work assignments as well as those of delegates including directing subordinates to meet established milestones
  • Resolves conflicts which arise and adheres to best practice for those requiring escalation
  • Can interpret policy on own initiative in terms of established objectives and in-line with SOP and ensure team members meet accepted standards
  • Keeps executive leadership informed of progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience as a program/project manager in the aerospace, communications, or IT industry is required with some level of personnel management experience.
  • Experience must include technical projects whereby the applicant was key to providing appropriate technical direction and support.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in electronic, software, and or mechanical systems/design development
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing a multi-disciplined engineering team
  • Previous experience in planning, implementing, and leading engineering programs and projects of significant size and impact
  • Understanding of software development methods and electrical/mechanical design
  • Experience with financial tracking methods and tools
  • Networking, SATCOM, and/or communication systems design experience
  • Software and/or Hardware development, integration, and deployment design experience
